Alan G Hartman is an Associate Professor and Program Director of Modern Foreign Languages at Mercy College's School of Liberal Arts. He also serves as Founding Director of Latin American and Latino Studies, Director of the Center for Global Engagement, and Fulbright Language Teaching Assistant Coordinator. Dr. Hartman holds a D.M.L. and M.A., and his work spans academic leadership, language education innovation, and community engagement.
Education: Doctor of Modern Languages (D.M.L.) and Master of Arts (M.A.).
Research focuses on Hispanic, Italian, Italian American, Mediterranean, and Latin American studies. He emphasizes cultural exchange through curricular development and global programs. Recent initiatives include Albanian language courses (highest enrollment nationally), online Spanish master’s courses, and interdisciplinary programs like the B.A./M.S. TESOL and B.A./M.B.A. tracks.
Professional roles include Vice President of Italian Charities of America, Board Director for the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (NY Chapter), and Board Trustee for the White Plains Historical Society.
Key achievements: Secured a 2011 NEH Grant for Latin American and Latino Studies, developed Fulbright Arabic programs, and created over a dozen innovative language/cultural courses.
