Alan Fridlund

Alan Fridlund is a Professor of Psychological & Brain Sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), within the College of Letters & Science. His research focuses on human ethology, nonverbal communication, neuroethology, and psychopathology, with a particular emphasis on the evolutionary and social functions of facial expressions. He authored seminal works such as Human Facial Expression: An Evolutionary View (1994) and co-authored the introductory textbook Psychology (6th Ed., 2003). Fridlund has received the Distinguished Early Career Contribution Award from the Society for Psychophysiological Research and held faculty positions in Experimental Psychopathology at the University of Pennsylvania.

His research explores how facial expressions shape social interactions with both real and imagined social agents, integrating evolutionary theory with behavioral ecology.
