Alan Fernihough is a Senior Lecturer in Economics at Queen's University Belfast's Queen's Business School. He specializes in economic history, particularly Irish economic history, demography, international trade, and applied econometrics. He holds a PhD from University College Dublin. Currently, he serves as Programme Director for the BSc Business Economics and BSc Economics and Accounting programs. His research explores topics such as the impact of railways in post-Famine Ireland, the retreat of the Irish language frontier, and the lessons from historical trade collapses. He has contributed to significant publications on Irish economic history and quantitative methods, including work on the Great Irish Famine and Protestantism's influence on human capital formation. His academic contributions bridge historical data analysis with contemporary policy implications.
