Alan D. Woodlief Jr. serves as Vice Dean and Professor of Law at Elon University School of Law, a position he has held since joining the founding faculty in 2005. He previously served as interim dean (January 2022 to June 2023) and now leads the law school's Flex Program in Charlotte, overseeing admissions, facilities, budget, and strategic operations.

Professor Woodlief's research and teaching focus on appellate advocacy, criminal law, civil procedure, professional responsibility, commercial law, remedies, and child advocacy. He founded the Guardian Ad Litem Appellate Advocacy Clinic (2015), where students represent abused and neglected children in appellate courts, and directs the nationally recognized Moot Court Program established in 2008.
His scholarly impact includes widely cited treatises on North Carolina damages, civil trial practice, and appellate practice, alongside his role as Reporter to the Criminal Subcommittee of the Pattern Jury Instruction Committee since 1999, drafting jury instructions for state criminal trials.
Professor Woodlief has coached numerous award-winning moot court teams, hosts the annual Billings, Exum & Frye National Moot Court Competition, and serves on the North Carolina Bar Association's Appellate Rules Study Committee and the Legal Education Assistance Foundation Board.
