Dr Alan Butler is an Associate Lecturer at the University of Plymouth, leading the Heritage MA Display and Interpretation module and co-directing Plymouth Heritage Praxis. He is also Director of the Pride in Plymouth Community Trust and actively involved in community heritage initiatives. His work focuses on LGBTQ+ history, community archives, and oral history preservation.
- Education: Completed a 2016 AHRC-funded PhD titled “Performing LGBT Pride in Plymouth 1950–2012” at the University of Plymouth.
His research established an LGBTQ+ history collection at The Box (formerly Plymouth and West Devon Record Office), featuring 100+ oral histories and memorabilia. This archive won the 'Most Inspirational' award from the Community Archive and Heritage Group. He serves on the Oral History Society’s LGBTQ+ Special Interest Group and chairs its committee, while also contributing to the National Trust at Saltram House as a Volunteer and Community Engagement Officer.
Alan collaborates with the Plymouth Community Heritage Network and Plymouth Octopus, where he holds trustee roles. His work bridges academic research with community engagement, emphasizing inclusive heritage practices.
