Prof. Dr. Alain Griffel is a Full Professor of Constitutional and Administrative Law at the University of Zurich, specializing in spatial planning, construction, and environmental law. He holds a licentiate (1987) and doctorate (1990) from the University of Zurich, later becoming a private lecturer (2001) and full professor (2005). His academic career includes roles as Dean of Studies (2018–2022) and teaching positions at ETH Zurich.
Practical experience includes roles as court secretary, legal advisor for Zurich city offices, and head of legal departments in environmental and construction regulation. He received the Walther Hug Prize (1992) for his doctoral work on military personnel rights.
Research focuses on public law intersections with environmental protection, urban development, and administrative procedures. Notable works include Environmental Law – A Textbook (2004) and General Administrative Law in the Mirror of Case Law (2017). Over 100 publications span legal commentaries, textbooks, and articles in journals like ZBl and URP.
Griffel is an editor for the Schriftenreihe zum Umweltrecht and has advised on legal matters for Zurich’s city government. His work critiques policy gaps in environmental and zoning laws, emphasizing legal frameworks’ societal impact.
