Alain Goriely is a mathematician currently serving as the Statutory Professor of Mathematical Modelling at the University of Oxford and Director of the Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He also holds the Gresham Professorship of Geometry since 2024, delivering public lectures on topics like biological growth and mechanics. His research spans applied mathematics, dynamical systems, and interdisciplinary problems in biology and neuroscience.
- PhD from University of Brussels (1994)
- Lecturer at University of Brussels (1994-1996)
- Research group founder at University of Arizona (1996-2010)
- Statutory Professor at University of Oxford (2010-present)
- Gresham Professor of Geometry (2024-present)
His scientific outreach explores phenomena such as plant tendril mechanics, brain folding, and seashell geometry, documented in works like The Mathematics and Mechanics of Biological Growth (2017) and A Very Short Introduction to Applied Mathematics (2017).
- Sloan Fellowship
- Royal Society Wolfson Research Award
- Cozzarelli Prize (National Academy of Sciences)
- Engineering Medal (Society of Engineering Sciences)
- Fellow of the Royal Society (2022)
As Director of the Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, Goriely leads a team advancing mathematical applications in biology, medicine, and physical systems. Upcoming lectures (2025-2026) will further explore geometric patterns in nature, from hands to gravity to knots.
