Alain-G. Gagnon is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Quebec at Montreal (UQAM), where he holds the Canada Research Chair in Quebec and Canadian Studies since 2003. He previously taught at Queen's University, Carleton University, and McGill University from 1982 to 2003. He founded the Centre de recherche interdisciplinaire sur la diversité au Québec (CRIDAQ) and directs the Groupe de recherche sur les sociétés plurinationales (GRSP) and the Centre d’analyse politique – Constitution et Fédéralisme (CAPCF).
His research focuses on the comparative study of small and minority nations, emphasizing federalism, nationalism, political economy, and the sociology of intellectuals. His work has shaped debates on justice, stability, and cultural diversity management in multinational states, influencing scholars in Belgium, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Canada.
The articles and books he has authored or co-edited explore legitimacy clashes in multinational states, minority nation emancipation, and frameworks for balancing justice and stability. His publications highlight federalism, cultural diversity, and governance challenges in plurinational societies, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach across political theory and comparative politics.
Scientific awards include the Governor General's International Award for Canadian Studies (2016), the Ordre de la Pléiade (2018), the Order of Canada (2019), and the Mildred A. Schwartz Lifetime Academic Achievement Award (2020). He also received the Josep Maria Vilaseca i Marcet Book Award (2010) and was a finalist for the Smiley Book Award (2014).
As a founding director of multiple research centers and current President of the Royal Society of Canada (2022–2025), Gagnon continues to lead academic discourse. His work, translated into 20 languages, has established the Quebec school of federalism as a globally recognized framework for analyzing multinational states.
