Professor Alaa Zalata is a Professor of Accounting at Southampton Business School, University of Southampton. He holds a PhD and MRes in Accounting and Finance from the University of Aberdeen and has over a decade of academic experience, including a lectureship at the University of East London before joining Southampton in 2015. His research focuses on financial accounting, with a particular emphasis on earnings quality, earnings management, and corporate governance. Current research explores the role of accounting in promoting gender equality in corporate boardrooms and the impact of public financial management systems on fiscal transparency.
Zalata is a Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy and has published in top-tier journals like British Journal of Management, Journal of Accounting, Auditing & Finance, and Journal of Business Ethics. He serves as an ad-hoc reviewer for leading accounting journals and has secured grants from the British Academy and collaborative initiatives. He supervises numerous PhD students and teaches courses in financial and managerial accounting at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
His research groups include the Centre for Research in Accounting, Accountability and Governance and the Centre for Accounting Education (CAE). Key projects include examining debt covenants, fiscal transparency post-COVID-19, and the influence of female audit partners on credit ratings. Zalata’s work bridges theoretical and applied accounting practices, emphasizing governance mechanisms and ethical financial reporting.
