Akshat Jain

Akshat Jain, MD, MPH is an Assistant Professor at Loma Linda University with dual appointments in the School of Medicine (Pediatrics, Hematology/Oncology Division) and the School of Public Health. As a pediatric hematologist-oncologist, he specializes in inherited bleeding disorders and hemoglobinopathies, with particular expertise in sickle cell disease and hemophilia. His clinical and research efforts focus on advancing understanding and treatment through innovative approaches including gene therapy. Dr. Jain has held key positions in national and international medical committees and serves as the 2024 Ambassador for the American Society of Hematology.

Dr. Jain's research spans multiple critical areas in hematology, with emphasis on sickle cell disease, hemophilia, and global health applications. His work explores immunotherapy, endothelial dysfunction in sickle cell disease, COVID coagulopathy, women's health and fertility in sickle cell disease, and addressing barriers to optimal care for hematologic disorders across 17 countries. His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on global disparities in healthcare access, climate change implications for patients with blood disorders, and innovative approaches to transition of care for sickle cell patients.

His extensive research portfolio includes numerous clinical trials and studies, particularly through the Children's Oncology Group, with recent work examining topics like the impact of climate change on pregnant women with sickle cell disease, barriers to care for adults with sickle cell disease, and global disparities in knowledge and access to care for sickle cell patients across different economic settings. His publications reflect a commitment to both clinical innovation and addressing systemic healthcare challenges.

Dr. Jain has received significant recognition for his contributions to pediatric hematology, including being named a Fellow of the Royal Society of British Sciences (FRBS) in 2021 and serving as the 2024 Ambassador for the American Society of Hematology. He was also awarded the American Thrombosis and Hemostasis Network 2022 Data Grant as Principal Investigator. His work as a key opinion leader in pediatric bleeding disorders has been featured in national and international media.

As a consultant to the Ministry of Health in various countries and an advisor to the World Health Organization, Dr. Jain brings substantial expertise in classic hematology and global health. His vision for the Inland Empire includes creating an all-inclusive center of excellence for hematology and gene therapy for rare disorders, with particular focus on women's health in rare disease and access to care for diverse underserved populations globally. His research enterprise has successfully developed over the past five years, with program development ongoing for the past seven years.
