Akiva Zamcheck serves as Assistant Professor of Music at Lafayette College, joining the faculty in 2024. His appointment focuses on critical analysis of music's political and economic dimensions within institutional frameworks.
His research examines how political and economic forces determine the lifecycle of music venues and institutions, with particular emphasis on identifying contradictions between stated political commitments and actual outcomes in contemporary performance. Current work investigates mid-late 20th-century musicians who repudiated their own careers after realizing their artistic output unintentionally served opposing political interests. Zamcheck develops methodological tools to clarify music's dominant political functions within specific contexts.
Teaching responsibilities include World Music Traditions—exploring sound cultures in regions shaped by inter-imperialist conflict—and Audiodrama, where students collaboratively dissect manipulative social media sound design while developing subversive alternatives. Zamcheck frames each course as an experimental space adapting to student initiative and capabilities.
