Courtney B. Ryan is an assistant professor of theater at Lafayette College, featured among the institution's newest faculty members as of fall 2024. She teaches in the Theater department with courses including THTR 209: Theater and Environment and THTR 110: World Theater I: Antiquity-19th Century.
Dr. Ryan specializes in eco-performance, examining how artistic performances created in, with, and on the environment can highlight environmental injustices and imagine more equitable ecological futures. Her research is motivated by climate crises that disproportionately impact low-income and BIPOC communities, though she acknowledges these performances won't solve 'wicked problems' but can expose uneven effects and suggest alternative ecological practices. In her teaching philosophy, she fosters what she calls an 'accountable space' where students bring their whole selves into artistic study and creation through self-reflective and active learning.
Dr. Ryan maintains an office in Room 117 at 248 N. Third St., where visitors are welcome to meet her (and her self-described 'struggling office plants'). Her work represents an important intersection of theater arts and environmental justice, contributing to Lafayette's academic community through innovative approaches to understanding ecological challenges through performance.
