Akihiro Nakamura, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor and Clinician Scientist in the Department of Medicine at Queen's University, specializing in rheumatology and translational research. He holds academic affiliations with the Division of Rheumatology, School of Medicine, and Translational Institute of Medicine. His research focuses on spondyloarthritis (SpA), particularly osteoarthritis (OA) and axial SpA, with an emphasis on immunological mechanisms, bone formation, and novel therapeutic targets. He co-discovered the roles of MIF and HIF-1α in SpA, leading to international patents.
- Education: MD from Saga Medical School; PhD from University of Toronto.
- Leadership: Founder of QURESPA (Queen’s Research Program for SpA) and Board Member of SPARTAN.
His lab combines pre-clinical models and human samples to study inflammation and bone formation in SpA/psoriatic arthritis. Key interests include CAR-T cell therapies, HIF/MIF pathways, and musculoskeletal health. Over 50 peer-reviewed publications include work in Science Translational Medicine, Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, and Cellular & Molecular Immunology.
Scientific contributions include patents on MIF/HIF pathways and co-authorship on seminal reviews on SpA pathogenesis. His clinical work bridges translational research to patient care, aiming to improve outcomes through innovative therapies.
