Aitor Mugarza is an ICREA Research Professor at the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), where he leads the Atomic Manipulation and Spectroscopy Group since 2013. His research focuses on quantum electronic and magnetic phenomena at the nanoscale, utilizing advanced techniques like scanning tunneling microscopy and synchrotron radiation spectroscopy. He holds a PhD in Physics from the University of the Basque Country (2002) and completed postdoctoral work at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and ICMAB through a Marie Curie Fellowship.
- Education: PhD in Physics (2002, University of the Basque Country)
- Research Interests: Nanoscale quantum phenomena, 2D materials, molecular electronics, magnetic anisotropy, topological insulators
His recent work examines atomically precise graphene nanostructures, 2D quantum materials, and rare-earth interface interactions. Publications highlight strategies for nanoporous graphene synthesis and quantum transport engineering, with collaborations spanning from Lawrence Berkeley to ICMAB. Current projects emphasize molecular adsorbate effects on topological surfaces and spin-orbit coupling manipulation.
Scientific Awards:
- Marie Curie Fellowship (2002-2007)
- Ramón y Cajal Fellowship (2007)
Publications demonstrate expertise in magnetic relaxation, electron scattering, and surface-induced material stabilization. As of 2025, his group continues to pioneer atomic-scale material design and quantum interface engineering.
