Dr Aisha Djelid is the Broadbent Career Development Fellow in American History at the Rothermere American Institute (RAI) and St Edmund Hall, University of Oxford, specializing in slavery, gender, and health in the antebellum United States.
Her educational background includes:
- BA (Hons) from the University of Reading
- MA from the University of Reading
- PhD from the University of Reading
Her research centers on enslaved people's experiences, focusing on forced reproduction, intimate relationships, parenthood, and health through intersections of gender, capitalism, and long-term legacies. Current work examines enslaved children's agency, resistance development, and distinctions between refusal and resistance compared to adults.
Her 2024 article in American Nineteenth Century History analyzes enslavers' interference in sexual relationships, with a monograph on forced reproduction forthcoming from the University of Georgia Press.
She holds the Broadbent Career Development Fellowship.
As Equality and Diversity Representative for the Association of British American Nineteenth Century Historians (BrANCH), she organizes the Harriet Tubman Prize and a mentoring scheme for postgraduate researchers in nineteenth-century US history.
