Aimen F Shaaban, MD, serves as Professor in the Department of Surgery (Pediatric General Surgery) and Pediatrics at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, with clinical appointments at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
His academic journey includes:
- MD from University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine (1991)
- General Surgery Residency at University of Iowa Hospitals (1996)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship in Fetal Surgery at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (1999)
- Fetal Surgery Fellowship at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (2000)
- Pediatric Surgery Residency at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (2001)
- Chief Surgical Residency at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (2002)
Dr. Shaaban's research pioneers fetal surgical interventions for life-threatening congenital conditions, with dual expertise in congenital diaphragmatic hernia and neural tube defects. His work bridges molecular diagnostics and surgical innovation, developing non-invasive biomarker tools and minimally invasive fetoscopic techniques to improve survival and quality of life for high-risk fetuses. Current projects focus on translating laboratory findings into clinical applications through the Simpson Querrey Institute for Epigenetics.
His 2025 publications reveal three converging research trajectories: molecular diagnostics for prenatal risk stratification, engineering-driven surgical instrumentation, and health services research addressing geographic barriers to care. These reflect a translational approach spanning basic science, technical innovation, and patient-centered outcomes.
Dr. Shaaban maintains dual board certification from the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery and Pediatric Surgery.
