Aimee Chin is a Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Houston. She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from MIT (2001). Her research focuses on labor and development economics, with specializations in immigration policy, education economics, and language acquisition. She has conducted seminal work on the long-run impacts of immigration, bilingual education policies, and the socioeconomic effects of language proficiency in diverse contexts like India, the U.S., and Puerto Rico. Her teaching spans undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. levels, including courses in microeconomics, econometrics, and applied economics.
Key research contributions include analyzing the labor market consequences of Japanese-American internment, evaluating educational interventions in India via Operation Blackboard, and studying the economic returns of English proficiency globally. Her work often employs rigorous empirical methods like regression discontinuity and field experiments. Recent studies focus on newcomer schools in Houston ISD and the effects of DACA on undocumented migrants’ educational and occupational choices.
