Dr Ahmed Khaleel serves as Lecturer in Arabic at the University of York's Department of Language and Linguistic Science, where he has taught since 2012 after joining as a part-time tutor for the Languages for All programme and advancing to Associate Lecturer in 2021. His pedagogical approach centers on 'teaching through delight,' integrating cultural immersion with development of core language skills to transform Arabic acquisition into an inspiring career-enabling experience.
His educational trajectory includes a PhD in English - Modern Comparative Literature from the University of York (2015), an MA in English Literature (Modern Poetic Drama-W. H. Auden) from Almustansiriyah University, Baghdad, and a BA in English from the same institution.
Khaleel's research forms a dynamic nexus between Comparative Literature, Arabic Linguistics, and Human Rights, exemplified by his doctoral work 'The Poetics of Human Rights: Auden and al-Jawahiri in the 1930s.' He pioneers studies on poetic translation ('translating the untranslatable'), sociolinguistic evolution of Iraqi Arabic dialects, and literary responses to conflict. His human rights advocacy since 2003 manifests both academically and operationally through NGO partnerships.
His publication portfolio reveals consistent thematic threads: historical-political analysis of Arabic literature (particularly WWII and post-ISIS Iraq), sociolinguistic investigations of English loanwords in Iraqi Arabic, and diaspora language experiences. These works collectively demonstrate how literary scholarship intersects with refugee experiences, post-conflict recovery, and cultural identity preservation.
Notable recognitions include:
- Higher York Award (2012)
- BBC Arabic very short story competition victory (2009)
Khaleel actively shapes community discourse as Chair of York City of Sanctuary Board of Trustees (2020-present) and member of York Hate Crime Partnership. His advisory impact extends through Senate membership and York University of Sanctuary Monitoring Group participation, where he leverages academic expertise to support refugee integration and combat hate crimes.
Though not leading formal research laboratories, Khaleel operates within influential community networks including York City of Sanctuary, where he coordinates academic-community partnerships addressing sanctuary city implementation, refugee resettlement, and cultural mediation between displaced populations and host communities.
