Adrian T. Keatinge-Clay is a Professor in the Department of Molecular Biosciences within the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin. He leads the Keatinge-Clay Lab, which focuses on understanding the complex biochemical machinery of polyketide synthases (PKSs) - enormous enzymes that function as molecular assembly lines for producing pharmaceutical compounds.
His research spans four interconnected areas:
- Natural Product Biochemistry: Studying polyketides, a diverse class of molecules including important pharmaceuticals like erythromycin and rapamycin
- Biosynthesis: Investigating how PKS enzymes catalyze carbon-carbon bond formation, cyclizations, and stereospecific reductions
- Biophysics: Determining atomic resolution structures of PKS enzymes to understand their architecture
- Biocatalysis: Harnessing PKS enzymes for 'green chemistry' applications under ambient conditions
His publication record shows consistent contributions to polyketide synthase research since 2012, with recent work (2021-2023) focusing on structural characterization of cis-acyltransferase systems, stereochemical control mechanisms, and engineering approaches to create novel polyketides. His research bridges biochemistry, structural biology, and organic chemistry to advance understanding of these complex molecular assembly lines.
Dr. Keatinge-Clay earned his Ph.D. from the University of California at San Francisco in 2004 and his B.S. from Stanford University in 1999.
His research has been published in high-impact journals including Nature Products Reports, Angewandte Chemie, Chemical Reviews, and ACS Chemical Biology, demonstrating the interdisciplinary nature of his work spanning biochemistry, structural biology, and chemical engineering.
