Dr Adrian McCallum is a Senior Lecturer in Geotechnical Engineering and Engineering Lead at the University of Sunshine Coast (UniSC), Queensland, Australia. He holds a BSc(Hons) from NSW, BE(Hons) from WA, GradDip in Meteorology from BoM, and a PhD from the University of Cambridge. He is a core member of UniSC's Indigenous and Transcultural Research Centre (ITRC), focusing on transcultural collaboration in extreme environments.
His research spans geotechnical engineering in polar regions, climate change adaptation, and remote area science. Notable projects include:
- Developing snow strength assessment techniques using Cone Penetration Testing (CPT)
- Assessing glacial dynamics in Greenland and Antarctica
- Evaluating sustainable transport solutions on K’gari (Fraser Island)
McCallum has conducted fieldwork in the Arctic, Himalayas, and Antarctica, emphasizing data collection in extreme environments. His teaching focuses on Geology, Geomechanics, and Climate Change Adaptation. Professional recognition includes the Menzies Engineering Scholarship and Centenary Medal for contributions to polar expeditions.
He advocates for Adventure STEM education, mentoring students through field expeditions and integrating Indigenous knowledge systems. Current research includes avalanche detection technologies and peatland carbon sequestration studies.
