Adrian Ely is a Professor of Technology and Sustainability at the University of Sussex Business School, leading SPRU's Policy Training & Executive Education. He holds a PhD in comparative regulation of transgenic crops and has over 25 years' experience researching science-policy interfaces, sustainability transitions, and global development. His work spans international regulatory frameworks for biotechnologies, innovation governance in China, and transformative pathways to sustainability.
Education: Originally trained in natural sciences, he completed postgraduate studies at Sussex (2000-2006). Key roles include Deputy Director of the STEPS Centre (2011-2016), co-leader of the Transformative Pathways Network (2015-2021), and member of the Sussex Asia Centre Steering Committee. International collaborations include research in France, Austria, USA, Kenya, India, and Argentina, with a focus on China's science policies since 2007.
Research Interests: Focuses on agri-food systems, genome editing governance, energy transitions, and pro-poor innovation. Develops frameworks for sustainable development through transformative knowledge networks. Active in policy engagement via initiatives like the CHNUK project on antibacterial resistance and Sussex Sustainability Research Programme.
Recent work emphasizes co-producing knowledge across disciplines and cultures. His projects address systemic challenges like antibiotic innovation systems in China, low-carbon transitions in developing countries, and participatory methods in citizen science for urban food systems. Outputs include over 100 peer-reviewed articles and edited volumes like Transformative Pathways to Sustainability.
Grants & Partnerships: Involved in EU FP6-funded Safe Foods project (food safety governance), CHNUK (China-UK science policy), and Low Carbon Innovation in China. Member of the Centre for Bionetworking and Pathways Network. Current projects explore regulatory harmonization, climate action pathways, and inclusive innovation models.
Labs/Teams: Core member of SPRU's Science Policy Research Unit, leading teaching and executive training programs.
