Dr. Adonay A. Montes serves as an Assistant Professor and Chair of the M.S. in Educational Counseling program at the University of La Verne's LaFetra College of Education. He also directs the Spanish Bilingual Bicultural Concentration. Born in San Salvador, El Salvador, Dr. Montes immigrated to the United States at age 14 and spent his formative years in La Puente, California.
Dr. Montes' research agenda focuses on working with diverse populations, counselor leadership, bridging school and community ties, immigrant and youth development of possible selves, parent education, community and civic engagement, and critical pedagogy. He also has significant interests in mindfulness practices, emotional literacy, qualitative research methodologies, and improving college and university access for underrepresented student populations.
His scholarly work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at state, national, and international conferences. Dr. Montes' research has received media attention and has been featured in the Los Angeles Times, NBC, and Telemundo.
Before joining the University of La Verne as full-time faculty, Dr. Montes worked as an elementary school teacher and middle and high school counselor. He initially taught part-time as an adjunct professor at ULV before transitioning to his current full-time position.
Dr. Montes holds a Ph.D. from Claremont Graduate University, an M.S. from San Diego State University, and a B.A. from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.
Outside of his academic pursuits, Dr. Montes enjoys spending time with his family, reading, hiking, and riding his road bike.
