Dr. Adolphus Belk is a Professor of Political Science and African American Studies at Winthrop University, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. He joined the institution in 2003 and specializes in Black politics, race and ethnic politics, mass incarceration, public policy, and Hip-Hop studies. His research bridges academic inquiry with social justice advocacy, particularly in marginalized communities.
Belk holds a Ph.D., M.A., and B.A. in Political Science and related fields from the University of Maryland and Syracuse University. He has published widely in journals like The Journal of Race and Policy and co-edited For the Culture: Hip-Hop and the Fight for Social Justice (2022). His work critiques systemic racism, mass incarceration, and the role of cultural movements in political resistance.
Belk collaborates with the Winthrop Poll and has advised on public opinion research. His courses include African American Politics, Race and Ethnic Politics, and Public Policy Analysis. He actively engages in interdisciplinary dialogue, blending political theory with cultural critique.
