Tricia Rose is the Chancellor's Professor of Africana Studies and Associate Dean of the Faculty for Special Initiatives at Brown University. She holds a PhD (1993), MA (1987) from Brown and a BA (1984) from Yale. Her research focuses on systemic racism, African American cultural politics, and expressive culture. She directs the Systemic Racism Project and teaches courses like 'How Structural Racism Works' and 'Hip Hop Music and Cultures.' Notable awards include the 1999 'Top 100 Books of the 20th Century' for Black Noise and the 1998 Golden Dozens Teaching Award. Rose critiques commercialized hip hop's depictions of Black life while advocating for cultural resilience.
