Dr. Andreana Clay serves as Professor of Sociology and Dean of the College of Health and Social Sciences at San Francisco State University. Her research examines youth culture, identity formation, and activism through frameworks of race, gender, sexuality, and class.
Her influential book The Hip-Hop Generation Fights Back: Youth Activism and Post-Civil Rights Politics (NYU Press, 2012) analyzes how youth of color organize as activists in contemporary social movements. Scholarly articles explore hip-hop culture, queer sexuality, youth activism, and hip-hop feminism in publications including American Behavioral Scientist, Meridians, and numerous anthologies.
Teaching areas include sociological theory, queer cultures, gender studies, popular culture, and youth studies. Her courses critically examine the intersections of race, class, gender, and sexuality in social structures and cultural production.
