She has received significant recognition, including the ERC Starting Grant (2023) and the inaugural Leiden University Political Science Teaching Award (2024).
Her work spans parliamentary oversight of the European Central Bank, the European Council’s institutional role, and public perception of EU redistribution policies. She advises three PhD candidates and collaborates widely with institutions like the Jacques Delors Centre. Akbik actively promotes EU studies through teaching at both BSc and MSc levels and engages in policy debates via academic networks such as the European Consortium for Political Research.
Key grants include the ERC Starting Grant for EUROTYPES and funding for research on Nordic defence policies. She is a member of the Young Academy Leiden, advocating for early-career researchers. Her interdisciplinary approach combines quantitative and qualitative methods, addressing issues like policy design, institutional power dynamics, and experimental analysis of stereotypes in governance.
