Adenaya Adenike

Dr. Adenike Adenaya is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Germany, since August 2025, funded by the DFG Walter Benjamin Position. She previously held a postdoctoral role at the Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM) under Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg (2022–2025) and served as an Associate Junior Fellow at the Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg (2025).

• Education: PhD in Environmental Sciences and Biodiversity (2021–2024), Master of Science in Microbiology (2018–2021), and Bachelor of Science in Microbiology (2009–2014).

Research Interests: Dr. Adenaya’s work lies at the intersection of marine microbiology, antibiotic resistance, and global health. She investigates pharmaceutical contaminants and antibiotic resistance genes in marine systems, particularly in under-studied zones like the sea surface microlayer. Her projects (IBCASSMic, MHCEPH, TIASCE) explore microbial-contaminant dynamics in anthropogenically influenced regions such as the Baltic Sea and West Africa.

Publications Trends: Her research spans antibiotic resistance in coastal waters, surfactant impacts on oxygen exchange, and persistent contaminants like artificial sweeteners. Methodologies include bioinformatics, ecotoxicology, and multidisciplinary field studies across the North Sea, Baltic Sea, and West Africa.
