Josefine Karnatz

Josefine Karnatz is a PhD student at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Germany, affiliated with the Research Division of Marine Biogeochemistry and the Research Unit of Biological Oceanography. Her work focuses on biogeochemical processes in the sea-surface microlayer, air-sea exchange, organic matter dynamics, and microplastics in marine environments.

• Education: M.Sc. in Biological Oceanography (University of Kiel, 2022), B.Sc. in Biosciences (University of Rostock, 2020).

Her research spans the Baltic Sea, North Sea, and Indian Ocean, with participation in expeditions like RV SONNE (SO307 INDICOM), RV HEINCKE (HE644 BASS campaign), and RV ALKOR (LAPLAS projects). She contributed to the CenBASE project and presented a poster on phytoplankton-derived biopolymers at the SOLAS Open Science Conference 2024.
