Adele Nelson

Dr. Adele Nelson is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Austin, where she also serves as Co-Director of the Center for Latin American Visual Studies (CLAVIS) and faculty affiliate at the Lozano Long Institute for Latin American Studies (LLILAS). Her research focuses on 20th-21st century Latin American art, particularly Brazil's postwar and contemporary art movements. Key interests include art & social identity, institutional histories, transnational exchanges, and artistic activism.

Education: BA in Portuguese/Brazilian Studies & Art Semiotics (Brown University), MA/PhD in Art History (NYU Institute of Fine Arts).

Recent projects include Forming Abstraction: Art and Institutions in Postwar Brazil (winner of 2023 Antonio Candido Prize & CHOICE Award), the Social Fabric: Art and Activism in Contemporary Brazil exhibition/grant project, and edited volumes on Lygia Pape, Hélio Oiticica, and Mário Pedrosa. Current research explores women printmakers' transnational networks in Brazil.

Awards: Supported by American Philosophical Society, Fulbright, NEH. Grants include Andy Warhol Foundation funding for Social Fabric project.
