Dr Adam Woodhouse is a Research Fellow affiliated with Robinson College and the Department of Politics and International Studies (POLIS) at the University of Cambridge. His work focuses on the history of European political thought from the late Middle Ages to the early modern period, with an emphasis on republicanism, theories of empire, and the global impact of intellectual history.

His research explores conceptions of empire in Italian Renaissance republican thought, particularly Machiavelli's theory of the imperial republic, and the role of money in debates about sovereign power. He also engages with non-academic audiences, notably through his essay on Edward Colston and the Black Lives Matter movement for the African American Intellectual History Society blog.
Recent trends in his work include global perspectives on European political thought and interdisciplinary approaches to early modern intellectual history.

At the University of Chicago, he served as Collegiate Assistant Professor in the Social Sciences and Co-Chair of the Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts. His teaching spans the history of political thought, intellectual history of early modern Europe, and political theory.
Dr Woodhouse is actively involved in the POLIS department, contributing to seminars on political thought and intellectual history. He is currently finalizing his first book manuscript, which reconstructs Machiavelli's theory of the imperial republic.
