Jérémie Barthas is a CNRS Research Fellow at the Institute of Modern and Contemporary History (IHMC, UMR 8066), a joint research unit of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, École Normale Supérieure (ENS), and Université Panthéon-Sorbonne in Paris. His work bridges political, institutional, and financial history with intellectual history and political theory, focusing primarily on Renaissance Florence and Machiavelli's political thought. Barthas has held prestigious positions at Villa I Tatti (Harvard's Center for Italian Renaissance Studies), the Italian Academy at Columbia University, and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and maintains an affiliation as a research associate at Queen Mary University of London's Centre for the Study of the History of Political Thought.
Barthas's research centers on Florentine financial thought during the High Renaissance (1470-1540), examining how financial crises influenced constitutional development. His groundbreaking 2023 monograph Machiavelli costituzionalista reinterprets Machiavelli as a constitutional thinker through analysis of his 1522 Florentine State Reform Project, earning him the Accessit du prix Galasso 2023. His scholarly interests span the history of political thought, intellectual history of political economy, history of public finance, constitutional history, and the political and intellectual history of the Republic of Florence during the 15th-16th centuries.
His extensive publication record reveals a consistent focus on Machiavelli's political economy, constitutional theory, and reception history, with recent work exploring connections between financial systems and republican institutions. Barthas has made significant contributions to understanding Machiavelli's evolution from The Prince to the Discourses, particularly regarding tribunician power and constitutional design.
