Dr. Adam Tyson is an Associate Professor of Southeast Asian Politics at the University of Leeds' School of Politics and International Studies, part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. He joined in 2011 after working in Canada, Indonesia, and Malaysia. He leads interdisciplinary projects on environmental sustainability, development aid, and governance in the Asia-Pacific. Currently, he oversees the Faculty’s international strategy, prioritizing equitable global partnerships.
Key research areas include Indonesia’s post-1998 decentralization challenges, China’s administrative reforms, and the impact of palm oil policies on environmental and social dynamics. He collaborates with institutions like the British Academy on evidence-based forestry in Indonesia. Tyson teaches undergraduate modules on China and Southeast Asia, supervises PhD students, and publishes on topics ranging from blasphemy laws to pandemic responses in China.
His work highlights how development aid is often co-opted by local political agendas and examines the complexities of patron-client relationships. Recent projects include analyzing Indonesia’s presidential dynasticism and the role of digital tools in palm oil transparency. Tyson is Chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Studies UK and maintains active professional networks through LinkedIn and Google Scholar.
