Adam Showman was a Professor at the University of Arizona's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory until his passing in 2020. He specialized in atmospheric dynamics of planetary bodies, with research spanning Jupiter, Saturn, exoplanets, and brown dwarfs. He earned his Ph.D. from Caltech in 1999 and joined UA in 2001, becoming full professor in 2012.
His research revolutionized understanding of:
- Atmospheric circulation on hot Jupiters and tidally locked planets
- Zonal jet dynamics on giant planets
- Cloud feedback mechanisms in brown dwarfs
- 3D modeling of exoplanet atmospheres
- Ocean dynamics on terrestrial exoplanets
His 15 most recent publications demonstrate sophisticated modeling of atmospheric processes, particularly using phase curve observations from Spitzer and Hubble to constrain climate dynamics. Work consistently addressed tracer transport, cloud physics, and thermal structure across diverse planetary bodies.
Major honors include AGU Fellowship (2019) and Galileo Circle Fellowship (2018). He advised 12 PhD students, served as Icarus editor, and contributed to NASA mission concepts like Jupiter Europa Orbiter. His group pioneered the dominant paradigm for hot Jupiter atmospheric circulation.
