Jeremy Bloxham is the Mallinckrodt Professor of Geophysics at Harvard University's Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. His research focuses on planetary interior dynamics, particularly magnetic field generation in Earth's core and gas giant planets like Jupiter and Saturn. He has served as Harvard's Department Chair (2000-2006) and Dean of Science (2006-2018), returning to full-time faculty afterward.
Education: BA in Mathematics (Cambridge, 1982); PhD in Geophysics (Cambridge, 1986). His work pioneered numerical models of Earth's dynamo and expanded to planetary magnetism through NASA's Juno mission (Jupiter Co-Investigator since 2004). Key achievements include first self-consistent Earth core dynamo models and uncovering Jupiter's deep zonal jets extending thousands of kilometers below clouds via Juno gravity data.
Research Interests: Planetary magnetic field dynamics, interior structure determination through magnetic and gravity measurements, dynamo theory in terrestrial and giant planets, and time-dependent core flow analysis. Active in Juno mission science team since 2011.
Recent Publications Trends: Focus on Juno mission results including Jupiter's magnetic field morphology, deep zonal flow dynamics, and core-envelope interactions. Also continues Saturn dynamo modeling and comparative analysis of Uranus/Neptune magnetic anomalies.
- Awards: Macelwane Medal (AGU, 1994), Chapman Medal (RAS, 2001), Royal Society Fellowship (2007), Honorary Pembroke College Fellow (2008)
Advising/Grants: Long-term Juno mission involvement (NASA funding); no student names listed in provided texts. Led NSF-funded projects on planetary dynamo simulations and Earth's core flow reconstructions.
Labs/Teams: Bloxham Group at Harvard, Juno Science Team member since 2004.
