Dr. Adam Rees is a Visiting Researcher at the University of Plymouth's School of Biological and Marine Sciences (Faculty of Science and Engineering), affiliated with the applied Marine Ecosystems Research (aMER) group and collaborating with the Blue Marine Foundation. His work focuses on marine ecology, particularly the impacts of human activities on marine habitats, with a strong emphasis on fisheries management and Marine Protected Area (MPA) effectiveness. He holds a PhD from Plymouth University (2018) investigating the ecological effects of potting density in the Lyme Bay MPA under supervisors Mike Attrill and Martin Sheehan.
Rees' research spans fisheries sustainability, marine renewable energy impacts, and marine litter. His current roles include coordinating UK-wide research projects as an assistant project manager at the University of Plymouth and consulting for the Blue Marine Foundation. Key projects include monitoring Lyme Bay reef recovery since 2010 and assessing the ecological and socio-economic impacts of MPAs.
His publications highlight innovative approaches such as using shipwrecks as de facto MPAs, integrating computer vision in marine science, and evaluating optimal fishing strategies. While no formal awards are listed, his work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals 14 (Life Below Water) and 15 (Life on Land) through practical conservation solutions.
Rees actively coordinates interdisciplinary projects, blending ecological data with socio-economic analysis to address fisheries sustainability challenges. His research emphasizes adaptive management frameworks, rewilding strategies, and the application of technology in marine monitoring.
