Dr Adam P Lightfoot is a Senior Lecturer in Physiology at Manchester Metropolitan University's Department of Life Science. His research focuses on mitochondrial dysfunction in neuromuscular diseases, obesity, and aging. He has secured over £800k in grants from organizations like The Royal Society and Myositis UK. His work includes developing human pre-clinical models of muscle diseases and studying muscle-adipose crosstalk in sarcopenic obesity. Recent projects explore statin-induced myopathy and pharmacotherapy's impact on musculoskeletal health.
Education:
- BSc (Hons) Biomedical Sciences, 2006
- MRes Cell Biology, Gothenburg University, 2007
- PhD, University of Liverpool, 2011 (Skeletal Muscle Endocrine Role)
Research Interests: Dr Lightfoot investigates mechanisms underlying muscle weakness in myositis, mitochondrial dysfunction, and the interplay between muscle and adipose tissue. His lab employs advanced co-culture systems and metabolic analyses to study these processes. He collaborates with Dr Nasser Al-Shanti to develop human-relevant muscle disease models.
Grants & Awards:
- Mersey Kidney First Award (Postdoc, 2013)
- Royal Society Grant (2018)
- Physiological Society Fellowship (2018)
Advising & Labs: Accepts self-funded MRes/PhD students. Active in lab development for neuromuscular junction modeling and muscle-adipose crosstalk studies.
