Adam Johnston is a Brady Presidential Distinguished Professor of Physics & Astronomy and Director of the Center for Science & Mathematics Education at Weber State University. He holds joint appointments in physics instruction and science education research. Johnston's scholarship investigates how learners construct scientific understanding across formal/informal settings, emphasizing epistemology and identity formation.
His NSF-funded Propel project creates pathways for future STEM teachers through scholarships and classroom apprenticeships. Johnston teaches courses ranging from elementary physics to science pedagogy, constantly revising curricula to prioritize experiential, model-based learning over content coverage.
Recent publications demonstrate a thematic focus on reimagining science education through interdisciplinary lenses, including collaborations with artists and athletes. His work advocates for pedagogical approaches that connect scientific reasoning to lived experiences.
