Adah Almutairi is a Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), holding primary appointments in the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Department of NanoEngineering. She also serves as Director of the Center for Excellence in Nanomedicine and Engineering. Her research focuses on nanomedicine, nanotechnology, polymer science, and drug delivery systems. Almutairi’s work includes developing inflammation-responsive nanoparticles, photothermal therapies, and biocompatible materials for clinical applications.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Materials Chemistry, University of California, Riverside (2005)
- Postdoctoral studies at UC Berkeley (2005–2008) under Jean Fréchet, specializing in nanoprobes for in vivo imaging.
Research Interests: Her lab designs smart materials that respond to biological stimuli (e.g., hydrogen peroxide, pH) to enable precise drug delivery, imaging, and therapy. Key areas include:
- Inflammation detection via nanosensors
- Photothermal fat removal using gold nanoparticles
- Biodegradable polymers for wound healing and tissue engineering.
Awards:
- NIH Director’s New Innovator Award (2009)
- 2016 Kavli Fellow
- 2023 TAKREEM Laureate
Grants & Leadership: Leads interdisciplinary teams at UCSD’s Center for Excellence in Nanomedicine, focusing on translational research. Her patents include licensed pharmaceutical technologies for nanoparticle drug delivery.
Labs & Teams: Directs the Laboratory for Bioresponsive Materials in Therapy & Imaging, fostering collaborations across pharmacy, nanoengineering, and radiology.
