Achim Pfeiffer

Prof. Achim Pfeiffer serves as Professor of Architecture at Bochum University of Applied Sciences, specializing in building within existing structures and architectural renovation. His work focuses on shifting perceptions of the built environment through strategic approaches to adaptive reuse and historical preservation.

His academic journey began with architecture studies at RWTH Aachen (1990-1997), culminating in a diploma under Prof. Mirko Baum. Prior to academia, he practiced as an architect at Heinrich Böll in Essen for over two decades (1997-2020).

Pfeiffer's research centers on reclaiming historical construction norms where building reuse was standard practice before industrialization shifted focus to new construction. He champions cultural acceptance of aging structures through projects like transforming Duisburg-Hochfeld's vacant office building into a trades training center, repurposing Wuppertal's former boiler house (Building 27.1), and adapting Gelsenkirchen's 1950s church office for contemporary ecclesiastical needs. His methodology emphasizes structural analysis, design strategies for existing buildings, and community-centered interventions.

As an advisor, Pfeiffer has mentored students including Vera Hertel, Michelle Korth, and Timo Nikisch on real-world renovation projects. He co-founded the Umbaulabor (Renovation Lab) in Gelsenkirchen, conducting hands-on summer schools since 2024 at Bergmannstr. 23. Professional leadership includes serving on Dortmund's Design Advisory Board, Baukultur NRW's Umbaulabor committee, and urban design boards for Lünen and Arnsberg municipalities.
