Achille Stocchi

Achille Stocchi is a Professor at University of Paris-Saclay and serves as director of the Laboratoire des deux infinis - Irène Joliot-Curie (IJCLab), which unites five physics laboratories from the Orsay campus. He has led the Laboratoire de l'accélérateur linéaire (LAL) since 2011 and specializes in particle physics with particular expertise in quarks b.

Stocchi's research focuses on "2-infinite physics" - exploring fundamental interactions that govern both the infinitely small (particle physics) and the infinitely large (astrophysics and cosmology). His work bridges traditionally separate physics disciplines through the IJCLab, which brings together researchers from nuclear physics, theoretical physics, accelerator physics, and related fields to tackle complex questions about the universe at multiple scales.

As an educator, Stocchi has created two international schools: the Trans-European School of High Energy Physics (TESHEP) in Eastern Europe, which has operated for 13 years, and a similar program at An-Najah University in Palestine. These initiatives provide modern physics education in regions where access to contemporary knowledge was previously limited, with An-Najah University now recognized as a benchmark for high-energy physics research in the Middle East outside of Israel.

Under Stocchi's leadership, IJCLab is organized into seven divisions: astrophysics/astroparticle physics/cosmology; accelerator physics; high energy physics; nuclear physics; theoretical physics; energy and environment; and physics and health. The laboratory's engineering division includes specialized departments in electronics, IT and computing, instrumentation, and mechanics, creating what Stocchi describes as a "laboratory maker" with unique capabilities for designing and developing scientific instruments for future physics challenges.
