Abou Farman is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at The New School for Social Research, serving as Director of Undergraduate Studies and Departmental Faculty Advisor. He holds a PhD from The Graduate Center, CUNY (2012). His research focuses on secularization processes, post-humanism, technology, and aesthetics, with notable work on transhumanist projects and indigenous autonomy in the Peruvian Amazon. He is the author of two major books: On Not Dying: Secular Immortality in the Age of Technoscience (2020) and Clerks of the Passage (2012).
Farman’s current projects include collaborations with Shipibo Conibo Xetebo organizations to advance indigenous autonomy, alongside founding roles in Art Space Sanctuary and the Shipibo Conibo Center, NY. He has exhibited internationally as part of the artist duo caraballo-farman, receiving prestigious awards like the Guggenheim Fellowship and NYFA Fellowship. His teaching spans institutions including Bard College and Princeton University.
Research interests encompass Religion & Secularism, Science & Technology Studies, Death Studies, and Indigenous Autonomy. His recent publications explore themes like technoscientific eschatology, biological infinitude, and the intersections of art, activism, and anthropology. Farman advises students on senior projects and independent studies, emphasizing critical social theory and interdisciplinary approaches.
