Laura Y. Liu is an Associate Professor of Global Studies and Geography at Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts, The New School, and Affiliate Faculty in Sociology. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on spatial politics, labor organizing, migration, and the intersections of art/design with socio-spatial justice. She co-founded Praxis Tank to amplify knowledge from freedom struggles and is part of the Multiple Mobilities Research Cluster.
Education includes a PhD and MA in Geography from Rutgers University and a BA in Architecture from UC Berkeley. She holds professional affiliations with the Association of American Geographers, American Studies Association, and Association for Asian American Studies.
Research interests span community organizing, gender/race/spatial dynamics, militarism, and qualitative methodologies. Recent work examines sweatshop labor, post-9/11 urban displacement, and digital labor geographies.
Awards include the Mellon Engaged Scholarship Fund (2018-2019) and multiple faculty fellowships. Her publications bridge art, activism, and academia, including works on site-specific art, militarized spaces, and worker solidarity.
Liu advises the Praxis Tank initiative and contributes to urban studies programs. Upcoming courses include Global Gender and Sexuality (Fall 2025) and Global Economies (Spring 2026).
