Abigail Patthoff serves as Professor of Legal Research and Writing at Chapman University's Dale E. Fowler School of Law, where she has held a faculty position since 2012 after previously teaching at the University of Idaho College of Law. She also served as a visiting professor of Lawyering Skills at the University of California, Irvine School of Law during the 2022-2023 academic year.
Her educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in English earned summa cum laude and a Juris Doctor, both from West Virginia University, where she graduated Order of the Coif. Following law school, she clerked for The Honorable Frederick P. Stamp, Jr. on the United States District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia.
Professor Patthoff's research centers on innovative approaches to legal writing instruction and the psychological dimensions of legal education. Her work explores:
