Abigail D. Newman is a part-time lecturer in the History Department at the Universiteit Antwerpen, specializing in Early Modern European art with a focus on the interplay between Flemish and Iberian artistic traditions. She holds a Ph.D. from Princeton University (2016) and has held visiting professorships at the Universiteit Gent and roles as Research Adviser at the Rubenianum in Antwerp. Her research examines how Flemish artists and artworks influenced 17th-century Spanish art, collecting practices, and cultural identity during the Spanish Golden Age.
Her academic journey includes B.A. (Brown University, 2006) and M.A. (Princeton, 2011) degrees. She has curated exhibitions on art forgery, Nazi-looted artworks, and 20th-century Parisian portraiture. Her work has been supported by prestigious fellowships including the Fulbright grant and Mellon-Council Dissertation Completion Fellowship, earning her Princeton’s Jane Faggen Dissertation Prize (2017).
Her publications span Flemish animal paintings, Bosch’s legacy in Spain, and Rubensian studies, appearing in journals like De Zeventiende Eeuw and Nederlands Kunsthistorisch Jaarboek. She has also edited volumes on Rubens and contributed to major exhibition catalogues.
Her teaching and research bridge art history with broader cultural studies, emphasizing transnational artistic exchanges and the material culture of early modern Europe. She actively engages with museums such as the Rubenshuis Museum and Glessner House Museum, blending academic rigor with public-facing scholarship.
