Abigail Batley is a Lecturer in Engineering Design at Bournemouth University, Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Design and Engineering. She holds a BSc (Hons) in Product Design and is completing her PhD in Biomedical Design & Engineering at the same institution. Her work bridges academic research, teaching, and industrial collaboration, particularly with organizations like RNLI and STYLIDEAS.
- PhD in Biomedical Design & Engineering, Bournemouth University (2025)
- BSc (Hons) in Product Design, Bournemouth University (2017)
Her research focuses on advancing paediatric prosthetics through composite additive manufacturing, especially dynamic response ankle-foot devices that enable children to engage in sports. She also investigates the integration of generative AI in product design education, exploring its impact on ideation, concept generation, and design methodology. Her interdisciplinary work spans materials science, biomechanics, and human-centered design.
Her recent publications and grants highlight a strong trend in 3D printing, composite material analysis, and AI-driven design innovation. These works reflect her commitment to solving real-world challenges in healthcare and engineering education through cutting-edge technologies.
She has been recognized with several awards:
- Geoff Kirk Young Members Award (Institute of Engineering Designers, 2024)
- James Dyson Foundation Award (2016)
- You're Brilliant Award (SUBU)
Abigail supervises postgraduate and PhD students and leads multiple research grants, including projects on generative AI in 3D printing, paediatric prosthetics, and advanced manufacturing supply chains. She actively fosters industry-academia collaboration, organizing events and case studies to enhance knowledge exchange and innovation. Her outreach includes conference presentations at international forums such as ISP0 World Congress and the Engineering and Product Design Education conferences.
She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a member of the Institution of Engineering Designers and IED Registered Product Designer, underscoring her commitment to professional excellence in engineering and design education.
