Joanne Mayoh is Senior Lecturer in Sport, Physical Activity and Health at Bournemouth University. Her research intersects physical cultural studies, digital cultures, and wellbeing, with emphasis on inclusion, embodiment, and online health behaviors. She holds a Ph.D. in Health Informatics (2011) and BSc in Sport and Exercise Science (2006).
Research explores: 1) Diversity in fitness culture and youth engagement with online health information, 2) Embodiment and identity in physical/gender practices, and 3) Methodological innovations in mixed methods phenomenological research. Current projects include ESRC-funded work on youth nature engagement.
Publications (2015-2024) show progression from methodological foundations to applied studies in digital health, gender, and fandom. Recent works analyze online suicide discourse (2024) and sports fan behavior (2024), employing qualitative and mixed methods approaches.
Awards include the SUBU You're Brilliant Award (2013). She supervises PhD students in gender, wellbeing, and physical culture topics. External roles include reviewing for Journal of Mixed Methods Research and serving as External Examiner for University of Plymouth.
Grant funding includes ESRC support for nature engagement research (2022). Teaching focuses on social perspectives in sport, research skills, and mixed methods methodology.
