Abid Hussain is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carleton University, Ottawa, teaching Municipal Engineering (CIVE 3407/4407) and Energy & Resource Recovery from Waste (ENVE 5206) for 2025-2026, with prior instruction in Environmental Planning, Design Projects, and Engineering Disciplines.
His research centers on innovative waste valorization technologies focusing on bioenergy and value-added product recovery from municipal solid waste, agri-waste, and wastewater through three core approaches: microbial electrochemical technologies (METs), anaerobic digestion (AD), and fermentation of waste gases to high-value chemicals. He also investigates electromagnetic radiation applications for extracting bioactive compounds from food processing waste.
With over 3 years of industrial project leadership at the United Nations, Asian Development Bank, and The Energy and Resources Institute, he has spearheaded waste-to-energy and climate mitigation initiatives. At the National Research Council of Canada, he led decentralized solid waste and wastewater treatment projects for remote communities. His supervision includes Master's students Chandramouli Mukherjee (2024), Sharli Himatbhai Jodhani (2023), and Pooja Nandlal Radadiya (2022), whose theses explored acidogenic fermentation of PHB biopolymers, food waste, and leachate bed reactors.
