Abhimanyu Garg

Dr. Abhimanyu Garg is a Professor of Internal Medicine and Director of Metabolic Diseases at UT Southwestern Medical Center, holding the Distinguished Chair in Human Nutrition Research. He is globally recognized for pioneering research on lipodystrophy syndromes, including the first clinical trials of leptin therapy that led to FDA approval for generalized lipodystrophy treatment. His laboratory investigates genetic and metabolic mechanisms underlying adipose tissue disorders, insulin resistance, and diabetic complications.

Research encompasses congenital generalized lipodystrophy, familial partial lipodystrophy, and HIV-related lipodystrophies, with seminal work identifying AGPAT2 and lamin A/C genetic mutations. Clinical studies established monounsaturated fat diets as superior therapy for type 2 diabetes, influencing ADA guidelines. Current projects focus on leptin's role in metabolic regulation.

Honors include the Jean D. Wilson Award for mentorship. Dr. Garg maintains active collaborations with molecular biologists worldwide to translate genetic discoveries into therapies.
