Abhay Satoskar

Abhay Satoskar, MD, PhD, is a Professor and Vice Chair for Research in the Division of Experimental Pathology and Department of Microbiology at The Ohio State University. He holds a PhD in Immunology from the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow, UK) and an MD from the University of Bombay (India). His research focuses on understanding immune mechanisms in parasitic infections, particularly leishmaniasis, with emphasis on parasite persistence, immune evasion, and vaccine development. His work combines experimental models with clinical studies to address global health challenges posed by neglected tropical diseases.

Research Interests: Dr. Satoskar’s lab investigates mechanisms of parasite survival within host cells (e.g., monocytes, hematopoietic stem cells), sex-associated differences in disease susceptibility, and development of novel therapies and vaccines. Key projects include identifying host cell reservoirs for Leishmania parasites, studying X-chromosome-linked immune responses, and advancing CRISPR-engineered live-attenuated vaccines. Recent breakthroughs include discovering HSCs as reservoirs in visceral leishmaniasis and validating a next-generation vaccine candidate.

Collaborations and Translational Work: The lab collaborates with the College of Pharmacy and international groups to develop field-deployable treatments and vaccines. Their vaccine candidates have entered pre-clinical testing, with promising safety and efficacy profiles. Translational research also explores repurposing anti-cancer drugs (e.g., ibrutinib) for leishmaniasis treatment.

Lab Leadership: Dr. Satoskar mentors graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and visiting scholars in immunology, microbiology, and parasitology. The lab is part of the broader Satoskar Lab at Ohio State’s Wexner Medical Center, located in Columbus, Ohio.
