Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdullah Erdem TAŞ is a distinguished scholar in Islamic History and Arts at Dumlupınar University's Faculty of Theology, where he serves as both Associate Professor and Department Head. With a robust academic background including a PhD from Istanbul University, he has established himself as a leading expert on Ottoman North Africa, particularly focusing on Libya (Tripoli) and the Western Hearths (Cezayir, Tunus, and Trablusgarp provinces).
His research interests span Ottoman history, Islamic history, North African history, and Islamic states and dynasties in Africa, with particular emphasis on the Karamanli Dynasty period (1711-1835) and Ottoman diplomatic relations in the region. Prof. TAŞ has produced an impressive body of work including 31 publications, with 11 scientific books and 9 original articles that have significantly contributed to our understanding of Ottoman Africa.
His most recent publications include 'Historical Sources and Historiography in the Maghreb' (2024) and 'Türkiye-Libya (Tripoli) Relations from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic' (2023), which demonstrate his ongoing scholarly productivity and relevance. His work consistently examines the complex political, administrative, and social structures of Ottoman North Africa, with particular attention to archival documentation.
Prof. TAŞ actively engages in academic service through his leadership roles as Department Head (since 2017) and former Director of the Research and Application Center (2020-2025). He teaches core courses in Islamic Civilization, Islamic History, Ottoman Turkish, and Paleography, shaping the next generation of scholars in these fields.
